Florida’s Stand Your Ground Law, which Trayvon Martin’s killer is using to shield himself from arrest – with the full complicity of the Sanford Police Department – became the template for “model” legislation endorsed and promoted nationally by the American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC). ALEC is funded in part by the National Rifle Association and the Koch Brothers. With Stand Your Ground Laws on the books in 23 states and proposed for more, it’s vital for the Occupy Movement to understand the law’s genesis and its major backers.

Lisa Graves from the Center for Media and Democracy and Nick Surgey from Common Cause prepared this report showing the relationship between ALEC, the Koch Brothers and the NRA.

Lisa Graves is the executive director of the Center for Media and Democracy and Nick Surgey is a legal associate at Common Cause.
